Breville Espresso Only Drips or Won’t Flow: Fix Grind, Dose or Blockage First

Across multiple current Breville manuals, “espresso only drips from the portafilter spouts or not at all” has a remarkably consistent troubleshooting list: grind too fine, too much coffee, excessive tamping, an empty/unseated tank, a blocked basket, or scale.

Do not open the machine first. Breville’s own troubleshooting starts with coffee preparation, basket flow and water supply.

First test: does water flow with no portafilter?

If bare-group water flow is normal, the machine can move water through the group. Focus on the coffee/basket side before assuming a pump or solenoid fault.

Is the grind too fine?

Breville’s official solution is to use a slightly coarser grind. Keep dose and target yield steady, move coarser, then retest. Do not simultaneously lower dose and change grind if you want to know which change fixed the restriction.

Is the basket overfilled?

Breville repeatedly tells users to lower the dose when the basket is too full. On machines supplied with the Razor dose-trimming tool, use it as the manufacturer’s dose-height reference.

Could the basket itself be blocked?

Yes. Breville tells users to clear blocked basket holes with the supplied cleaning pin. Some manuals additionally tell owners to soak a persistently blocked basket/portafilter in hot cleaning solution for about 20 minutes, then rinse thoroughly.

When does scale become the next branch?

If water supply, basket and puck variables are correct but flow remains restricted, Breville lists descaling as a next step. Use the descale procedure for the exact machine; cleaning-cycle and descale-cycle instructions are not interchangeable on every Breville model.

Decision table

Observation Next move
Normal bare-group flow; shot barely drips Coarsen grind / check dose and basket
Basket holes visibly blocked Use supplied cleaning tool; soak if manual specifies
No bare-group flow Check tank seating, water level and descale branch
Restriction remains after owner maintenance Use exact model support/service path
