For a Gaggia Classic Pro, Classic Evo, or Classic E24 that uses Gaggia's manual descaling procedure, use Gaggia descaler, remove the portafilter, send the solution through both the steam wand and brew group, then complete the full fresh-water rinse in the machine's own manual.

Do not copy that procedure to every machine carrying the Classic name. Gaggia's current Classic UP support page tells owners to contact an authorized service center or local distributor if descaling is needed. Check the label and the matching manual before you start.

This guide focuses on the manual Classic Pro / Evo / E24-style procedure used in Gaggia's current U.S./Canada E24 documentation. Older Classics can differ by market and revision, so their own booklet remains the authority.

Does this descaling procedure apply to your Gaggia Classic?

Match the machine to the manual before mixing any descaler.

Gaggia publishes separate manuals for different Classic generations and markets. The current U.S./Canada Classic E24 booklet contains a manual descaling cycle that sends solution through the steam wand and coffee brew unit. Gaggia's current Classic UP page gives different advice: if descaling is needed, contact authorized service or the local distributor.

What should you use, and when should you descale?

For the current Classic E24, Gaggia says to use its own descaling product and not vinegar or other descaling agents. The E24 maintenance section says to descale every two months, and the product FAQ also says every two months and/or when water flow is reduced.

Do not replace the manufacturer's chemistry with a household-acid recipe. The current E24 manual is explicit about using Gaggia descaler only. It also treats descaling as a different job from cleaning coffee residue from the filter holder, filters, screen, and group area.

If you need the coffee-oil cleaning procedure instead, use the Gaggia Classic backflush guide. Do not pour espresso detergent into the water tank as a descaler.

How do you run the descaling solution on a Classic Pro, Evo, or E24?

The current U.S./Canada E24 manual gives a specific sequence. Follow the booklet for your machine if any control labels or steps differ.

  1. Remove the filter holder and empty the water tank.
  2. Add half a bottle of Gaggia descaling solution, then fill the tank with fresh water to the MAX line.
  3. Turn the machine on and dispense about two 150 ml cups through the steam wand, then about two 150 ml cups through the brew unit.
  4. Turn the machine off and let the solution work for about 20 minutes.
  5. Turn it on again, repeat the same steam-wand and brew-unit dispensing, then turn it off for about 3 minutes.
  6. Repeat that dispensing step until the tank is empty.

Do not drink any liquid dispensed during the descaling cycle. If the tank runs dry unexpectedly or the pump loses prime, stop and use the machine's circuit-loading instructions rather than leaving the pump running without water.

How do you rinse after descaling?

The rinse is part of the official cycle, not an optional extra. The current E24 manual uses multiple full tanks of fresh drinking water and states a total of four tanks for the rinse operations.

  1. Rinse the water tank, refill it with fresh drinking water, and empty the drip tray.
  2. Run one full tank through the steam wand using the controls specified by the manual.
  3. Refill with fresh water, reinstall the filter holder as directed, and run one full tank through the brew group.
  4. Repeat the fresh-water operations again. The current E24 manual describes this as a total of four tanks.
  5. Refill with fresh water. Load or prime the circuit if the machine requires it.

Do not use smell or taste alone as a shortcut for the rinse volume when the manufacturer gives a defined procedure. Complete the full cycle before making coffee again.

Stop repeated chemical cycles when flow gets worse.

What if flow gets worse or flakes appear after descaling?

Do not respond by running repeated acid cycles without a diagnosis. A low-flow symptom can come from the tank feed, pump, group path, solenoid, scale, or another blockage. Particles also need to be separated by color, source path, model generation, and repeat behavior before you name the cause.

After-descaling symptom Safer next step
No water or much weaker group flow Stop repeated chemical cycles and use the Gaggia no-water diagnostic.
Dark flakes Pause drinks and use the black-flakes diagnosis; model generation matters.
Pump sounds dry or will not pick up water Stop the pump and use the model's circuit-loading or priming procedure.
Normal flow after the full rinse Return to normal use and keep the maintenance date with your water notes.

FAQ

Can I use vinegar to descale a Gaggia Classic E24?

No. Gaggia's current E24 manual says to use the Gaggia descaling product only and not vinegar or other descaling agents.

Do I leave the portafilter installed while descaling?

The current E24 procedure begins by removing the filter holder. It is reinstalled later during the fresh-water rinse stage. Follow the exact booklet for your own machine.

Is descaling the same as backflushing?

No. Descaling targets mineral deposits in the water path. Group cleaning and backflushing target coffee residue and oils. Use the cleaner and procedure intended for each job.

How often should I descale a Gaggia Classic E24?

Gaggia's current E24 maintenance section says every two months, and its product FAQ also says every two months and/or when water flow is reduced. Check the manual for your exact model and market.

Should I use this procedure on a Classic UP?

No. Gaggia's current Classic UP support page recommends contacting an authorized service center or local distributor if descaling is needed.

Where can I get the official instructions?

Use the Gaggia product page or product-search page to download the manual for the exact machine code on your label. Do not rely on a generic "Gaggia Classic descaling PDF" from an unknown mirror.
