Breville / Sage: Dual Boiler + Barista Express
The Dual Boiler and Barista Express use different architectures and daily workflows. This page separates their stock controls, accessory sizes and documented community modification paths so you can match a guide to the exact machine you own.
For Breville and Sage owners comparing stock controls, workflow and model-specific modification evidence.

Same brand family. Verify the regional model.
Breville and Sage are regional brand names used for closely related machines, but model codes, voltage, production revisions, parts and warranty terms can differ by market. Treat a Breville/Sage forum guide as a starting point, then confirm the exact model label and revision before using its parts list or internal-mod instructions.

Dual Boiler: stock controls and documented mod paths.
The BES920 Dual Boiler combines two stainless-steel boilers, a heated 58mm group, electronic PID control, an OPV, programmable low-pressure pre-infusion and dual pumps. Breville's manual also specifies a 3-hole steam tip. Community modders have documented additional manual flow-control approaches for years, but those modifications should be treated separately from the machine's stock controls. Use the BES920 manual for stock functions and original Home-Barista discussions for community modifications.
What should a Dual Boiler owner check before modifying it?
The stock BES920 already includes PID control and programmable low-pressure pre-infusion. The questions below separate stock controls, pressure measurement and community flow-control modifications so the next step is based on an identified need rather than a default parts list.
Measurement before OPV changes
Do not infer extraction pressure from a generic “12 bar” claim. The current Sage/Breville BES920 documentation describes full pump pressure as 9 bar in the pre-infusion workflow. Exact behavior can vary with measurement method and revision.
Programmable low-pressure pre-infusion
The stock BES920 already lets the user program pre-infusion duration and power, and manual operation can hold low pressure before full pump pressure.
Manual flow control through the shot
The long-running community “Slayer” path re-routes the brew-water path through the machine's existing hot-water valve so the valve can throttle flow during extraction.

Community Slayer-style routing
Uses the existing hot-water valve as a manual throttle after internal plumbing changes.

The Barista Express BES870 is an integrated-grinder espresso machine built around a 54mm portafilter workflow. Current Breville regional product pages document a Thermocoil heating system with PID temperature control, low-pressure pre-infusion followed by 9 bar extraction via a 15 bar pump, and a manual steam wand intended for microfoam. Its workflow is different from the Dual Boiler because grinder, brew path and steam system are packaged as one appliance. Evaluate changes against the exact BES870 market/revision rather than treating it as a smaller BDB.

Check accessory fit, grinder carryover and the controls already built into your machine.
54mm accessory ecosystem
The BES870 uses a 54mm portafilter. Compatible precision baskets and bottomless portafilters exist, but parts should be matched to the exact Breville/Sage model rather than assumed from 58mm commercial hardware.
Measuring carryover before calling it “zero retention”
Ground coffee can remain in the grinder and chute, but input-output weight alone cannot prove exchange. Test a repeatable routine before adding bellows or changing the grinder.
Thermocoil, PID and manual microfoam
Current Breville BES870 pages document Thermocoil heating with PID control and a manual steam wand designed for microfoam. A steam-wand transplant is not a prerequisite for latte-art-capable milk.

Is the Breville Dual Boiler worth modifying?
The BES920 already includes dual boilers, PID control, a heated 58mm group and programmable low-pressure pre-infusion. Its long-running community modification history is useful if you want manual flow control or other model-specific changes, but that does not make every modification necessary. Start with the stock controls, identify the exact revision, and choose a modification only when it solves a problem you can describe.
The Dual Boiler is a well-documented modification platform, but stock controls should be understood before internal changes are added.
Can I do a Slayer-style flow-control mod on a BDB?
Yes, but first separate the stock controls from the community modification. The BES920 already has programmable low-pressure pre-infusion. The widely referenced community “Slayer” modification changes the internal water routing so the machine's existing hot-water valve can act as a manual flow-control valve during the shot. Home-Barista has documented the idea, variants and troubleshooting over many years. That community history is useful evidence, but it is not a Breville installation instruction and different revisions must be checked before any plumbing or electrical work.

Stock programmable pre-infusion and community manual flow control are different capabilities. Verify the exact machine before following a community modification.
Does the Dual Boiler OPV need adjusting?
Do not start from a universal “factory 12 bar” assumption. The current Sage/Breville BES920 manual describes full pump pressure as 9 bar in its programmable pre-infusion section. A gauge reading also depends on where and how pressure is measured. If a specific machine is being diagnosed or modified, record the exact model/revision and measurement method first; only then compare that result with model-specific service or community documentation.
Measure and identify the exact BES920 revision before deciding that the OPV needs adjustment.
What does the Dual Boiler's 58mm group change?
The BES920 uses a 58mm portafilter workflow, so many baskets, tampers and other tools are available in that size. The Barista Express uses a 54mm workflow, which means accessories must be selected for a different group size. The larger diameter also changes puck geometry for the same dose, but size alone does not determine shot quality or make one machine the right choice for every user.
Treat 58mm and 54mm as different accessory and puck-workflow standards; verify fit instead of assuming parts transfer between the two machines.
What should I know about the Barista Express 54mm workflow?
The BES870 uses a 54mm portafilter system. Compatible precision baskets, bottomless portafilters, tampers and distribution tools exist, but they need to be matched to that size and the exact regional model. The main practical difference from the 58mm Dual Boiler is accessory compatibility and puck geometry, not a simple beginner-versus-advanced ranking.
Build around the BES870's 54mm fit standard and compare accessories by compatibility and workflow, not by assuming the 58mm ecosystem is automatically better.
How should I check grinder retention on a Barista Express?
Start by separating three ideas: coffee left inside the grinder, older grounds exchanged into a later dose, and simple input-output weight difference. A scale can show dose consistency, but equal input and output do not prove that every particle is fresh. Use the same beans, grind setting and manufacturer-approved dosing routine for several doses before blaming the first-shot difference on retention or adding a bellows.
Before changing hardware, follow the cleaning path in the current U.S. BES870 manual: empty the hopper, run the grinder until it is empty, remove the upper burr, then brush the upper burr, lower burr and grind outlet. Breville separates this routine cleaning from deeper lower-burr / grind-fan disassembly, which it labels as advanced cleaning for a blockage between the burrs and grinder outlet. Use the current U.S. BES870 instruction manual before deeper disassembly.

Clean first, then measure a repeatable dosing routine before treating a bellows as a “zero-retention” fix.
Can I pressure-profile a Barista Express?
The Barista Express and Dual Boiler have different hydraulic layouts and control systems, so the BDB community flow-control routing should not be copied to a Barista Express. If pressure behavior on a Barista Express is the problem, start with the exact BES870/region manual, basket type, grinder and puck preparation, then use model-specific modification evidence rather than a BDB parts list. If manual pressure profiling is the actual goal, compare platforms designed or documented for that workflow before modifying the machine.
Treat Barista Express pressure-control questions as their own model-specific problem; do not infer compatibility from the Dual Boiler.
Does the Barista Express need a 9 bar OPV spring mod?
Do not assume it does. Current Breville regional product information describes low-pressure pre-infusion followed by 9 bar extraction delivered via a 15 bar pump. That means the pump's maximum rating and the intended extraction pressure are different numbers. Before changing springs or clipping coils, verify the exact model/revision and measure the behavior you are trying to correct.
Start from the documented stock 9 bar extraction workflow and only consider hardware changes with model-specific evidence.
Are Breville and Sage machines interchangeable?
Breville and Sage are regional brand names used within the same company group, and many machines are closely related across markets. That does not make every model code, voltage, production revision, replacement part or modification instruction automatically interchangeable. Match the label on the machine and the regional manual before using a guide written for another market.
Breville and Sage guides can overlap, but exact model code, voltage, revision and regional documentation still need to match.
Which Breville platform fits a modification project?
The Dual Boiler documents features that matter to many advanced users: 58mm workflow, dual boilers, PID and programmable pre-infusion. It also has a long-running community modification record. The Barista Express emphasizes a compact integrated-grinder workflow. That is a difference in architecture and use case, not a universal winner. Choose the machine around the coffee workflow you want and the level of internal modification you are willing to maintain.
Compare documented controls, grinder workflow and the specific modification you want rather than treating one Breville machine as the automatic choice.
Common Breville mod questions.
Short answers to the questions that come up most often. If your question is not here, the fault diagnosis page covers machine-specific troubleshooting.
Can I put a 58mm portafilter on a Barista Express?
No. The group head is 54mm. A 58mm portafilter will not fit. You need 54mm accessories specifically. The 58mm parts on the Dual Boiler will not transfer over.
Can internal mods affect the warranty?
They can. Breville's current U.S. warranty excludes defects or damage caused by unauthorized alterations, modifications or unauthorized repair, while consumer rights and warranty terms vary by market. Check the warranty for your exact product and region before opening or modifying the machine.
Can I add a PID to the Barista Express?
The Breville Barista Express BES870 already has PID temperature control in its Thermocoil heating system, as listed on Breville’s U.S. product page. Check the regional manual for the settings available on your machine before considering an external controller. Temperature problems also need diagnosis before hardware changes.
Where should I read the original BDB flow-control documentation?
Start with the long-running Home-Barista Dual Boiler threads and the referenced community documentation for the exact modification variant. Treat those sources as community modification records, not Breville service instructions, and verify the machine revision before following any routing details.
Is the Dual Boiler a good fit for my workflow?
That depends on the workflow you want. The BES920 documents a 58mm group, dual boilers, PID and programmable pre-infusion, while the Barista Express integrates the grinder into a more compact system. Compare those documented differences, current price/support in your region and the modification you actually intend to maintain.
