Breville Barista Express CLEAN/DESCALE Light: Flashing vs Solid

Real barista preparing espresso, used as workflow context rather than a Breville BES870 product photo

On current Breville Barista Express BES870 manuals, the first decision is the light state:

CLEAN/DESCALE indicator What the cited BES870 manuals say What to do
Flashing Cleaning cycle required Run the cleaning/backflush cycle for your exact regional manual
Solid Descaling required Run the descaling procedure for your exact regional manual

The important warning is that the meaning of the light is more portable than the button timing. The current US manual reviewed for this guide says to hold 1 CUP + 2 CUP + POWER for about 10 seconds to enter the cleaning cycle. The current ANZ R23 manual says 3 seconds.

So do not memorize a random forum timer and assume it applies to every BES870.

What does a flashing CLEAN/DESCALE light mean?

In both current BES870 manuals reviewed here, a flashing CLEAN/DESCALE indicator means the machine is asking for the cleaning cycle.

Breville describes that cleaning program as a back-flushing cycle. It uses the cleaning disc and a cleaning tablet, and Breville explicitly separates it from descaling.

That distinction matters because the tablet-cleaning program is aimed at the coffee path and backflush routine. It is not a substitute for removing mineral scale from the machine.

If the light is flashing, start by opening the cleaning-cycle section of the manual for your exact regional BES870.

What does a solid CLEAN/DESCALE light mean?

A solid CLEAN/DESCALE indicator means descaling is required in the current US and ANZ BES870 manuals reviewed for this article.

Descaling is a different maintenance operation from the tablet cleaning/backflush cycle. It uses the machine’s descale mode and the descaling solution/instructions specified for that manual.

Do not run the cleaning-tablet cycle just because it is easier to remember. If the light is solid, use the descale procedure for the exact machine documentation.

Why do some instructions say 10 seconds and others say 3 seconds?

Because the documented cleaning-cycle entry is not identical across the current regional manuals we checked.

Manual reviewed Cleaning-cycle entry Approx. cycle time Completion wording
Breville US BES870 manual Machine off; hold 1 CUP + 2 CUP + POWER for about 10 seconds About 5 minutes US manual describes 3 beeps
Breville ANZ BES870 R23 manual Machine off; hold 1 CUP + 2 CUP + POWER for 3 seconds About 5 minutes ANZ R23 describes 2 beeps

This is exactly the kind of difference that gets lost when a forum reply says “hold all three buttons.”

Treat the 3-second and 10-second numbers as manual-specific instructions, not competing universal truths.

If your machine was sold in a different region, carries different front-panel wording, or has another revision, use the manual matched to that unit before pressing a key combination.

What is the cleaning-cycle workflow?

For a BES870 whose manual matches the CLEAN/DESCALE workflow described here, the decision path is:

  1. Confirm the CLEAN/DESCALE light is flashing, not solid.
  2. Open the cleaning-cycle section of the manual for the exact regional BES870.
  3. Fit the cleaning disc and cleaning tablet as instructed by that manual.
  4. With the machine in the required off state, use the manual-specific 1 CUP + 2 CUP + POWER hold time.
  5. Let the automatic cleaning cycle complete; do not interrupt it because another region’s video uses a different timer.
  6. Follow the rinse/check steps in the same manual before returning to coffee.

Breville’s manuals also tell the user to repeat the cleaning cycle if the cleaning tablet has not dissolved after the first cycle. That is a documented next step; an improvised “reset sequence” is not.

What should you do when the light is solid?

Use the descale section, not the cleaning-cycle section.

The BES870 descale procedure has its own mode and its own sequence for the coffee and steam/hot-water paths. The current US and ANZ manuals use the 2 CUP + POWER combination to enter descale mode, but the safest rule is still to read the exact manual before starting because solution quantities, labels, and detail wording can vary.

A maintenance light is not a reason to mix instructions from three countries into one routine.

Can you just descale whenever the light is flashing?

Not if you are trying to answer the indicator correctly.

A flashing light is the manual’s prompt for the cleaning/backflush cycle on the BES870 documentation reviewed here. Descaling may still be due based on water hardness and maintenance history, but it is a separate maintenance decision.

If you descale while ignoring a flashing cleaning prompt, you may finish a valid descale and still not have performed the program the indicator requested.

The reverse is also true: a cleaning tablet does not remove mineral scale just because both tasks appear under the same CLEAN/DESCALE label.

Why can the light stay on after maintenance?

First confirm that you ran the program requested by the state of the light.

A common failure path is simple:

What the owner saw What they ran Why the indicator may still make sense
Flashing light Descale only The machine was asking for cleaning/backflush
Solid light Cleaning tablet cycle only The machine was asking for descale
Flashing light Correct cleaning cycle, tablet remains Manual says to repeat the cleaning cycle
Correct cycle completed, behavior still abnormal Unknown Exact revision/manual/support check is safer than inventing a reset

This article does not claim a universal hidden reset for every BES870. If the correct documented cycle has been completed and the indicator still behaves abnormally, identify the exact regional model/revision and use Breville support or the matching service information.

Does this apply to every machine called “Barista Express”?

No.

This article is scoped to BES870 documentation with the CLEAN/DESCALE indicator behavior described above.

Do not automatically apply its button timing to:

  • Barista Express Impress;
  • Barista Pro;
  • Barista Touch;
  • Dual Boiler;
  • older or region-specific Barista Express revisions whose panel wording differs;
  • a machine labeled CLEAN ME when the manual does not match the CLEAN/DESCALE instructions cited here.

The family name is not enough. Match the model code, region, panel, and manual.

US BES870 quick reference

Question US manual answer used here
Flashing CLEAN/DESCALE Cleaning/backflush cycle
Solid CLEAN/DESCALE Descale
Cleaning-cycle entry Machine off; hold 1 CUP + 2 CUP + POWER about 10 seconds
Cleaning-cycle duration About 5 minutes
If tablet did not dissolve Repeat cleaning cycle

Use the current US manual itself as the final authority for your machine.

ANZ BES870 R23 quick reference

Question ANZ R23 manual answer used here
Flashing CLEAN/DESCALE Cleaning cycle
Solid CLEAN/DESCALE Descale
Cleaning-cycle entry Machine off; hold 1 CUP + 2 CUP + POWER 3 seconds
Cleaning-cycle duration About 5 minutes
If your controls/manual differ Stop and match the exact machine documentation

Do not copy the ANZ 3-second hold to a US machine simply because the buttons have the same names.

FAQ

Is flashing CLEAN/DESCALE the same as “time to descale”?

No. In the current BES870 manuals reviewed here, flashing means run the cleaning/backflush cycle. Solid means descale.

Why did descaling not clear my flashing light?

The most direct explanation is that a flashing indicator is requesting the cleaning cycle in these manuals. Run the correct documented program for the exact machine rather than assuming both maintenance tasks share one reset.

Can I use vinegar instead of the specified descaler?

This guide does not recommend substituting household acids for the product/procedure specified by the machine’s manual. Follow Breville’s regional maintenance instructions.

My panel says CLEAN ME, not CLEAN/DESCALE. Should I still use 3 or 10 seconds?

Do not choose either number from this article until you identify the exact model/revision manual. Different panel wording is a signal that you may be looking at different documentation.

What if the light stays on after the correct cycle?

Confirm the exact model, region, revision, and that the documented cycle actually completed. If the manual’s stated repeat/check step does not resolve it, use Breville support rather than trying an unverified universal reset.
