A loud pump with no water is alarming, but Breville’s current troubleshooting tables start with a simple cause: the water tank is empty, below MIN, or not seated correctly. Do not order a pump before confirming the machine is actually being supplied with water.
Why can an empty tank make the pump sound different?
A vibration pump moving water sounds different from a pump trying to draw air. Breville manuals for several models explicitly pair “water doesn’t come through” and “loud noise” with an empty/low tank.
Whether the tank is fully locked in
Breville also lists an incompletely inserted tank as a cause of no group-head or hot-water flow. A full tank that is not correctly seated can therefore mimic a deeper hydraulic fault.
A test without coffee
Remove the portafilter and test the group. If water flows normally without coffee, move back to grind, dose and basket troubleshooting. If there is still no water, continue with water-supply/descale/model-specific purge steps.
Could the machine need descaling?
Yes. Current Breville troubleshooting tables list scale as a cause of no group-head/hot-water flow. Follow the descale sequence for the exact model; do not improvise with a procedure from another Breville.
What about purge or reset procedures?
This is model-specific. For example, current Barista Touch troubleshooting includes a factory reset for a purge-setting error. Other Breville models do not necessarily use the same reset. That is why this guide does not tell every owner to hold the same buttons.
When is pump replacement reasonable?
Only after the tank/feed path, owner cleaning/descaling and model-specific priming/reset steps have been checked and the fault is actually traced to the pump. A loud pump by itself is not proof of pump failure.
Decision table
| Observation | Next check |
|---|---|
| Tank below MIN | Fill tank |
| Full tank, not seated | Reseat/lock tank |
| Bare group flows | Diagnose coffee/basket restriction |
| No group/hot-water flow after supply checks | Descale / exact-model support path |
| Model reports purge-setting error | Use that model’s documented reset/purge procedure |
