Which Breville Portafilter Fits Your Machine?

Which Breville Portafilter Fits Your Machine? decision workflow

Start with your machine’s model number, then choose a portafilter specifically listed for that machine. The Barista Express BES870 and Barista Pro BES878 use 54 mm portafilters. The current Breville 58 mm naked portafilter lists the Dual Boiler BES920, Oracle Jet BES985 and Oracle Dual Boiler BES995. [1, 2, 4]

Diameter narrows the search. It does not prove that an arbitrary handle will lock into your group, hold your chosen basket or work with an assisted-tamping station. Check those separately before ordering.

*This reference uses manufacturer information checked on September 18, 2026. The table identifies documented size families; it is not a physical fit test of aftermarket products.*

Machine sizes in one table

Use the full code from your machine or its original documentation. A shop title containing “Breville,” “Sage” or “Barista” is not enough to identify the model. For a regional version with different naming or a code not shown here, use that region’s support information rather than guessing from the nearest name.

Machine Model code Documented family Basis for the entry
Barista Express BES870 54 mm Machine product specification [1]
Barista Pro BES878 54 mm US/Canada instruction book, printed page 7 [2]
Bambino BES450 54 mm Listed with Breville’s 54 mm naked portafilter [3]
Bambino Plus BES500 54 mm Breville’s model-specific 54 mm replacement portafilter [5]
Barista Express Impress BES876 54 mm Listed with Breville’s 54 mm naked portafilter [3]
Barista Touch BES880 54 mm Listed with Breville’s 54 mm naked portafilter [3]
Barista Touch Impress BES881 54 mm Listed with Breville’s 54 mm naked portafilter [3]
Dual Boiler BES920 58 mm Listed with Breville’s 58 mm naked portafilter [4]
Oracle Jet BES985 58 mm Listed with Breville’s 58 mm naked portafilter [4]
Oracle Dual Boiler BES995 58 mm Listed with Breville’s 58 mm naked portafilter [4]

A missing model is not automatically incompatible. It means this table does not establish its size or the correct replacement. That includes older machines and versions sold under other regional model codes.

For example, “Oracle” without the rest of the name leaves an important detail unresolved. Copy the model code into your parts inquiry. There is no benefit in making a tidy-looking compatibility chart by silently combining generations.

Which part is being replaced

A complete portafilter, a basket and a tamper are different purchases. Put the actual part name in your search and compare it with what comes in the box.

Part What to confirm with the supplier What the nominal diameter does not settle
Complete portafilter Explicit machine-model fit and the basket supplied Locking-lug geometry, sealing and handle clearance
Replacement basket Fit in that portafilter, retaining arrangement and usable depth Whether the basket bottoms out in a spouted body
Tamper Fit inside the exact basket at working depth Whether a closer-fitting base will bind
Dosing funnel How it seats on the basket or handle and its working clearance Whether it fits under the grinder or an assisted-tamping mechanism
Puck screen The basket and available headspace at the intended dose Whether adding the screen leaves enough clearance

These are buying checks, not instructions to modify a part until it fits. Ask for confirmation of the exact combination you plan to use. A basket advertised for a size family is not evidence that every handle in that family has the same internal depth.

Do not force a handle into the group or file its locking tabs to resolve a questionable purchase. Breville’s Barista Express instructions require the portafilter to be securely inserted before brewing and warn against removal during extraction, when it is under pressure. Use a recommended part and the procedure for your machine. [6]

Compatibility text and shopping recommendations are separate

Look for a model-specific statement in the description or parts documentation. A related-products carousel can serve another purpose.

Breville’s 54 mm naked portafilter page, for example, includes the Smart Grinder Pro BCG820 in its “Works With” list alongside espresso machines. The BCG820 entry concerns a grinder; it cannot establish the diameter of an espresso machine’s brew group. The same page separately describes the portafilter as compatible with 54 mm Breville espresso machines. [3]

This does not mean every item in a recommendation list is wrong. It means you need to know what relationship the list describes. A cup may work with a grinder, a basket with a handle, and a handle with a group. Those are separate interfaces.

For an aftermarket listing, ask the seller to name the machine and the complete part rather than accepting “universal 54 mm” or “commercial 58 mm.” Keep the written answer with the order. If the seller only repeats the diameter, the model-fit question remains unanswered.

Assisted tamping and grinder support are separate checks

A portafilter purchase has to suit your whole preparation routine. Make a note of where the handle sits while you grind, dose and tamp, not just where it locks during brewing.

For an Impress or Oracle model, ask whether the replacement and its supplied basket are approved for the machine’s assisted or automatic preparation system. The official naked-portafilter listings identify compatible machines, but they do not establish that an unrelated aftermarket basket, funnel or altered handle preserves every function. [3, 4]

You can send a specific question:

> I own a Breville [full model code] sold in [country]. Does [exact portafilter part number] fit the brew group with its supplied basket? Please also confirm compatibility with the machine’s grinding support and assisted or automatic tamping, where applicable. I plan to use [basket or funnel details], not only the stock combination.

If you normally grind into a dosing cup and tamp by hand, say so. If you rely on the machine’s preparation system, do not treat losing that function as a minor detail discovered after delivery.

A bottomless handle is a choice, not a size upgrade

Breville describes its naked portafilters as tools for observing and diagnosing extraction. [3, 4] That is a reason to choose one; it is not a reason to choose the wrong diameter or an unverified mount.

Keep your buying goal concrete. You may need a replacement for a damaged handle, a way to see the basket’s underside during extraction, or a different preparation arrangement. None of those goals requires buying every related accessory at the same time.

When the old handle still works, retain it while checking the new combination. If a supplied basket changes your recipe, record that change instead of attributing every difference to the handle. A comparison is easier to interpret when you know which part changed.

For a broader discussion of the two size families, the 51 mm versus 58 mm portafilter article addresses the separate question of diameter and brewing. It is not a Breville parts-compatibility list.

A five-field purchase record

Before paying, save the machine code, the seller’s part code, the stated compatible models, the included basket and any preparation-system limitation. A screenshot of the applicable description is more useful than a screenshot of the product’s color choices.

Record Your entry
Exact machine code and sales region ____________________
Exact portafilter part number ____________________
Written model-fit confirmation ____________________
Included basket and any replacement basket planned ____________________
Grinder-support or assisted-tamping limitation ____________________

On arrival, follow the manufacturer’s fitting instructions with the machine in the specified safe condition. Stop if the part binds, cannot seat as instructed or is visibly different from what was confirmed. Do not use a pressurized extraction as the first way to discover whether a questionable handle locks securely.

Questions before ordering

Can a Barista Express use a 58 mm portafilter?

The BES870 is specified with a 54 mm portafilter. A 58 mm handle is not a drop-in replacement established by that specification. Look for a handle explicitly suitable for the BES870 rather than shopping for a larger nominal size. [1]

Does the Barista Pro use the same size as the Barista Express?

The cited BES878 instruction book specifies a 54 mm portafilter, as does the BES870 product page. That places both in the same nominal size family. It does not independently certify every aftermarket handle or basket combination sold for that family. [1, 2]

Does a 54 mm portafilter need a tamper measuring exactly 54.00 mm?

Do not infer a precision tamper size from the family name alone. Use the basket maker’s recommendation for the exact basket and confirm that the base can enter and withdraw freely at tamping depth. A complete handle’s nominal size is not a measurement of that basket’s entire internal profile.

Can I use a Sage listing for a Breville machine?

Ask the seller to confirm the full model code and regional version. Similar branding or appearance is not a substitute for model-specific fit. When the code is absent from this reference, use the relevant manufacturer’s support information before ordering.

Start with the model table, then complete the purchase record. For other questions about your machine, return to the Breville and Sage reference page with the exact model already identified.
