The Flair 58 Plunger Key is a small alignment tool for older double-slot valve plungers. It helps rotate the plunger so the stem can lock into it correctly. It is not a universal Flair 58 accessory: Flair says it is not compatible with single-slot valve plungers bought after April 12, 2023, including all Flair 58 Plus machines.
If your plunger has moved out of orientation, the key can save you from repeatedly removing and reinstalling the plunger. If you have a newer single-slot plunger, use the current Flair assembly method instead of buying the key.
Why does a Flair 58 plunger need reorientation?
The valve plunger can rotate gradually during normal use. When the slots move into the wrong position, the plunger stem may no longer lock in with the pressure gauge facing forward.

Flair’s current assembly guidance says this gradual rotation is normal. On the older double-slot plunger, the slots should be at roughly the 12 and 6 o’clock positions so the stem tabs can engage and rotate into the locked position.
The Plunger Key is a convenience tool for that older setup. Flair’s product instructions say to place the key tabs into the plunger holes and rotate the plunger until its tabs face front and back.
What problem does the key solve?
Use the key to correct plunger orientation.
The key does not tighten the pressure gauge, change brew pressure, fix worn O-rings, repair a bent stem, or replace the lever hook or latch.
If the stem disengages because the plunger slots and stem tabs have rotated into alignment, reorienting the plunger addresses the geometry Flair describes. If the stem, hook or plunger is visibly damaged, stop treating the issue as an alignment problem.
Can you reorient the plunger without the key?
Yes. Flair’s assembly support says the plunger can also be reoriented with the stem. For a double-slot plunger that is badly oriented, Flair describes pulling or wiggling the plunger out with the stem and reinstalling it with the slots in the correct position.
The key offers a convenient alternative for compatible older plungers.

Which Flair 58 versions can use the Plunger Key?
The current Flair product page is explicit: the Plunger Key is for compatible Flair 58 and 58x double-slot valve plungers, and it is not compatible with single-slot valve plungers bought after April 12, 2023. Flair says that exclusion includes all Flair 58 Plus machines.

Double-slot plunger
Flair’s assembly instructions describe two slots. The stem tabs enter those slots, then the stem rotates to lock. If the slots rotate out of position, the key or stem can be used to reorient the plunger.
Single-slot plunger
Flair uses a different locking method on the single-slot version. One stem tab goes under the plunger lip opposite the slot; the other enters the slot before the stem rotates to lock.
Do not try to force the older Plunger Key onto this version.
Is the Plunger Key the same as the Stem Guider?
No. Flair’s Stem Guider is a different component that attaches to the lever hook on pre-2023 Flair 58/58x machines and helps maintain alignment as the lever descends.
The Plunger Key is a hand tool for rotating the plunger. The Stem Guider stays with the lever-hook assembly.

Flair also says the Stem Guider is not compatible with Flair 58/58x machines purchased after May 2023, so both parts have revision boundaries, but they solve different jobs.
When should you stop and contact Flair?
Stop using the machine and confirm the correct parts if the lever hook will not latch securely, the stem is bent or visibly damaged, the plunger will not stay seated after correct reorientation, the stem disengages even when the slots are positioned correctly, or your hardware does not match Flair’s current double-slot or single-slot instructions.
Flair specifically warns not to brew with an improperly locked or latched hook assembly.
