Empty the grounds, brush the accessible areas with a soft dry brush, and blow out loose dust. That is the safest first clean for most manual coffee grinders. For a deeper clean, use the disassembly instructions for your exact model. Water rules differ even within one brand, so check the maker’s guidance before rinsing any part.
You need a clean brush, a hand blower or other gentle way to remove dry dust, a cloth, and a clear table if you plan to take the grinder apart. Set aside a small container for removable pieces. Do not force a stiff adjustment dial or remove screws you cannot identify.
Cleaning depends on the grinder model
The handle, adjustment dial, burr material, and removable parts vary by model. Identify the model on the box or maker's page before opening anything. A Comandante C40, for example, has three mounting screws around the burr that its maker says to leave alone. A 1Zpresso grinder may use an internal, top, or external adjustment design, each with a different cleaning guide.

If the grinder is working normally, you can often stop after the dry clean below. For a grinder used heavily, Comandante suggests cleaning its burrs and interior about weekly; with light use, about monthly. That is guidance for its grinders, not a fixed schedule for every make. Our burr grinder cleaning frequency guide explains when taste and residue call for a sooner clean.
A dry clean before taking anything apart
Remove the beans and catch cup. Tip out loose grounds, then sweep the outlet and accessible surfaces with a soft dry brush. Use a hand blower to clear dust from places the brush cannot reach. Wipe the exterior with a clean dry cloth. Keep the brush and blower away from loose screws or washers if the grinder is already open.

This first pass follows the dry brush and air blower advice in 1Zpresso's FAQ and the brush and air guidance in Comandante's FAQ. It removes loose coffee without guessing how an unfamiliar grinder comes apart. If stale residue remains where you cannot reach it, move to the model's official disassembly guide rather than prying at the burr.
Can you wash a manual coffee grinder with water?
Check the model. 1Zpresso says not to clean its grinders with water. Comandante says not to soak or dishwash a C40; a damp cloth is allowed on a dirty wooden exterior if you dry it immediately. Its Ironheart carbon-steel burr must stay dry. By contrast, Comandante says its C60 and X25 can be rinsed under its instructions, followed by full drying of the disassembled moving parts. Neither model is dishwasher safe.

The material and construction decide the cleaning method. If your exact grinder is not named above, use dry cleaning until you have its manual. A removable catch cup may have different care instructions from the burr assembly; check that part separately.
Deep-cleaning only the parts the model's guide allows
Work above a table. Read the guide once before removing anything, then keep the parts in removal order. For 1Zpresso, choose the maker's cleaning instructions for your adjustment design; its external-adjustment guide is an example for supported external-adjustment models. For a Comandante C40, the maker describes removing the conical burr through the adjustment dial and warns against unscrewing the three burr mounting screws. Do not carry that sequence over to another model.

Brush the parts the guide tells you to remove. Keep any part dry unless its exact instructions allow water, and let permitted wet parts dry fully before assembly. Comandante's own C40 cleaning video below is useful if you own that grinder; its hardware and assembly order are specific to the C40.
Reassembly and a test before a full dose
Follow the manufacturer's order for washers, axle, burr, and adjustment parts. Return the adjustment to a normal grinding setting before you turn the empty grinder gently by hand; a grinder that was reset during cleaning may need to be dialed back in. If it turns normally, grind a small amount of coffee and check that the handle feels familiar and grounds exit as expected.

Stop if the handle binds, a new scraping noise appears, or you see metal dust. Recheck the model's assembly instructions and contact the maker if the cause is unclear. More brushing will not correct a misplaced part.
If the grinder still feels wrong, check the assembly before changing the grind setting again.
