What Is the Difference Between a Puck Screen and a Shower Screen on a Gaggia?

Shower-screen style disc — this sits in the group, not on the puck

A shower screen is bolted to the group. A puck screen is a loose disc on the coffee. Pesado’s News post (organic #1) draws that line: group hardware vs a puck accessory. HomeBaristaMods’ Gaggia service kit ($24) includes the shower path — gasket, screen, screw — not a 58 mm puck disc. How often to swap the shower is its own article.

If you only wanted pressurized vs commercial cups, that is the basket article.

The ranking post names two parts

Pesado’s explainer is the first Web article: a shower screen sits at the base of the group head; a puck screen sits on the tamped bed. People search both words because listings mix them. The Classic still has one group screen. A puck screen is optional steel on the coffee.

What each one does

The shower screen is the last factory part water hits before the puck. Pesado’s maintenance note is the same sitting as a Classic service: if flow stays uneven after a clean, or the disc is warped, replace it. A puck screen is an aftermarket filter on the coffee. It does not change the OPV ($19 spring).

Pesado also notes puck screens add thickness (about 0.2–1.7 mm). That is extra stack height — the usual reason a Classic handle suddenly will not lock.

IMS-class basket still — the puck lives in the cup, under a puck screen if you use one

What not to mix

Do not order an E61 8 mm / 73 / 57 gasket for a Classic shower job. Do not treat a puck screen as a replacement interval for the group screen. Two parts, two sits.

Puck-prep still — WDT and a puck disc are both on the coffee, not in the group

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a puck screen and a shower screen?

The shower screen is group hardware. A puck screen is a disc you put on the tamped coffee.

Does a Gaggia Classic need a puck screen?

No. It needs a working shower screen. A puck screen is optional.

Does the $24 service kit include a puck screen?

No. It is the group sitting: gasket, shower screen, screw.

Will a puck screen fix channeling?

It can change how water hits the bed. It does not replace grind, dose, or a non-pressurized basket.

Can I use an E61 shower screen on a Classic?

No. Classic group parts are not E61 73 mm-class seals.

Maintenance: maintenance kits.
