Dedica vs Gaggia Classic: which workflow fits you?

Compare the current De’Longhi Dedica EC685 with the current Gaggia Classic Pro E24 by documented hardware and daily workflow. This page does not rank either machine by hobby status, and it does not turn pump ratings into puck pressure.

Scope: the comparison below uses the current EC685 Dedica and current Classic Pro E24. Older Gaggia generations and other Dedica variants can differ; identify the exact model before applying a modification or accessory rule.

What do the current manufacturers actually document?

Heating systemThermoblock technology.Lead-free brass boiler and brass group.
Pressure wordingDe’Longhi markets 15 bar pressure; that is not enough evidence to call puck pressure 15 bar during extraction.Current Gaggia pages separate 15 bar pump rating from 9 bar OPV calibration on the US E24.
Filter-holder / group workflowCompact Dedica-specific filter-holder workflow; verify exact accessory fit by model.Professional 58 mm stainless-steel filter-holder.
Steam / milkAdjustable manual milk frother / Cappuccino System.Professional stainless-steel steam wand; current US E24 lists a 2-hole tip.
Valve / pressure releaseUse current EC685 documentation; do not infer an OPV or 3-way system from a generic pump-machine diagram.Current E24 product page documents a 3-way solenoid.

Does “15 bar” mean the Dedica brews the puck at 15 bar?

No conclusion like that should be drawn from the current product page alone. De’Longhi markets the EC685 around a 15 bar pressure system, but a pump/system rating is not automatically the same thing as the dynamic pressure at the coffee puck during a shot.

Pump15 bar specat the puck

Coarser grind: less resistance, so water rushes through and pressure at the puck stays low, whatever the pump is rated for.

Finer grind: more resistance, so the flow slows and pressure at the puck builds. The 15-bar figure is still only the pump's rating.

The current Gaggia E24 is a useful example of why those numbers must stay separate: Gaggia North America lists a 15 Bar Ulka pump and OPV Calibration: 9 Bar on the same current product page.

So this comparison page does not tell Dedica owners to add a dimmer or Gaggia owners to install a spring simply because a marketing number says 15 bar.

How does the daily workflow differ?

Dedica EC685: a slim machine built around rapid thermoblock heating and a manual frother. Check Dedica-specific fit for baskets and accessories.

Gaggia Classic Pro E24: a full-size single-boiler station with a steam wand and a 58 mm filter-holder system. Follow its manual's warm-up routine.

Is the Dedica “just a starter machine”?

That label is not very useful. The better question is whether its stock workflow matches your space, grinder, milk routine and willingness to modify hardware.

A compact Thermoblock machine can make sense for someone who values size and a straightforward stock workflow. A 58 mm brass-boiler platform can make sense for someone who wants the current Gaggia hardware and the broader Classic-family guide ecosystem.

Neither choice needs an HBM score or “percentage of specialty coffee” claim.

What changes if you want a non-pressurized basket workflow?

Moving from a forgiving stock basket system to a non-pressurized espresso workflow raises the importance of the grinder, dose, puck prep and exact basket/portafilter fit.

Pressurized: a second wall with one small exit makes most of the resistance, so the grind matters less.

Single-wall: water drains through many holes, so the coffee bed has to make the resistance. Grind, dose and prep matter more.

For the Dedica, verify that the basket and portafilter are made for the exact EC685-family fit before ordering. For the Gaggia E24, the current 58 mm system gives access to a broad standard-size ecosystem, but basket geometry and dose still matter.

Do not treat basket diameter alone as proof that one machine makes better espresso.

Which machine has better temperature stability?

This page does not publish a universal winner or old fixed temperature-drift numbers.

The current Dedica uses Thermoblock technology. The current Gaggia E24 uses a lead-free brass boiler/group. Those are real hardware differences, but actual brew-water stability depends on control logic, warm-up, flow, measurement point and machine state.

If temperature consistency is the problem you want to solve, identify the exact machine and measurement method before choosing a PID or internal modification.

What about steam and milk drinks?

Both current machines include milk-steaming hardware, but they are different systems. The Dedica uses an adjustable manual frother / Cappuccino System. The current Gaggia E24 uses a professional steam wand, and Gaggia North America lists a two-hole tip.

Two different systemsDedica: manual frotherE24: steam wandNo fixed winnerWeak? Diagnose first

Both machines steam milk, with different hardware. If steam is weak, diagnose the exact machine before a wand transplant or tip swap.

This page does not claim a fixed steam duration, pitcher volume, recovery time or “microfoam winner.” If steam is weak, diagnose the exact machine first rather than jumping to a wand transplant or tip swap.

Which is the better modification platform?

The Gaggia Classic family has a large public modification ecosystem, but “more moddable” is not the same as “better for everyone.” The current E24 also differs materially from older Pro/Evo/Original Classic machines, so compatibility still needs a generation check.

Stock+Dimmer+Gauge+Sensor+FittingEach dot: one more thing to check, seal or service

Every add-on is another part to check and service. Name the problem, then choose the modification.

The Dedica has an active accessory/modding community too, but HBM should not convert community experiments into one default dimmer, wand-transplant, gauge or Arduino path.

Choose the modification only after you can name the problem it solves.

What about long-term cost and durability?

No fixed winner belongs in an evergreen comparison. Retail price, parts availability, water quality, maintenance, usage, region and used-machine condition change the answer.

HBM therefore does not publish a fixed service-life age, fixed resale percentages, or hard-coded upgrade budgets here. Compare the current purchase price, documented service parts and the condition of the actual machine you are buying.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Dedica really have 15 bar?

De’Longhi currently markets the EC685 around a 15 bar pressure system. That should not be interpreted as a guaranteed 15 bar at the coffee puck throughout a shot.

Does the current Gaggia E24 still use an aluminum boiler?

No. Current Gaggia E24 pages document a lead-free brass boiler and group.

Does the current E24 automatically need a 9-bar spring?

Not the current US E24 based on Gaggia North America’s published specification: it already lists OPV Calibration at 9 Bar. Older generations/regions need their own check.

Can I assume a Dedica dimmer mod is the right first upgrade?

No. First identify the actual problem: grinder/basket fit, flow, temperature, steam, maintenance or another issue. Internal electrical modification should not be the default answer to a pump-rating number.

Which one lasts longer?

This page does not publish a universal lifespan winner. Condition, water, service history and availability of correct parts matter more than an unsourced fixed-lifespan rule.
